Caring for Your Hair

Splitting Hairs: What's Inside The Human Hair
Hair is the second fastest growing tissue in the body; bone marrow, the first. In fact, the average person produces 35 meters of hair fiber every day, with the average scalp containing approximately 100,000 follicles. Hair is actually made of protein and consists of three layers: the cuticle, cortex and medulla. The cuticle serves to protect the hair from stress and the environment while the cortex contains the melamine pigment that determines hair color. The medulla is the soft, sponge-like core of the hair.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
The life span of an average hair is from two to seven years, depending on how well your hair is cared for and other genetic factors. The first stage is the growth stage, where the follicle is in a continual growth cycle that lasts from two to seven years. At the end of this growth cycle the pear-shaped base that generates the hair follicle stops functioning. Next is the transition stage that lasts from two to three weeks, where the hair root moves from far below the skin to the surface of the skin. And, finally, there's the pause stage that lasts from one to two months, where hair loss occurs and a new follicle replaces it. How much hair loss is a natural occurrence? Fifty to seventy hairs per day is quite normal, and 85 percent of the hairs on your head are always in a growth stage. Needless to say, hair loss is a natural phenomenon and nothing to be overly concerned about.

Maintaining Your Hair's Health
To keep your hair looking its best and avoid premature hair loss or damage to hair follicles, shampoo and moisturize your hair on a daily basis. After all, your hair is comprised of up to 13 percent water. Eat foods that contain plenty of protein such as soybean, fish, rice and breads. A balanced diet is essential for healthy hair. In addition, when using hair dryers to dry your hair use a thermal protector or diffuser to avoid excess heat and drying of the hair follicles. Using the cool shot function or a different heat setting prevents this condition. Or, simply hold the hair dryer at a greater distance. Adding external conditioners and mousse can also help prevent over drying. The same recommendation is applicable for curling irons and brushes: avoid excessive heat and protect your hair with hair styling cremes or sprays that are alcohol-free. With heated curlers, treat your hair first with thermal protectant products. A holding spray will also reduce the amount of time you expose your hair to direct heat. In addition, avoid excess sun, or apply sunscreen products for added protection. Finally, maintain a positive frame of mind, reduce stress and keep yourself in good physical condition. Your hair is a shining example of your health.
